Some time ago Karoline worked for Matthew Herbert and illustrated most of his ‘Doctor Rockit’ album covers with rockets and assorted paraphernalia This developed her style, in particular the quirky characters, humour and hand drawn lettering. These have remained important elements of Karoline’s illustration and she now uses them in the books and zines she produces. Karoline sees her illustration as a craft and prefers to work by hand as much as possible. In keeping with this Karoline uses a Japanese Print Gocco machine as well as screenprinting to make book covers combined with digital or litho printing for the inside pages.
Karoline has initiated a number of collaborations with other illustrators including the ’Girls Who Draw’ series of postcard books, which are accompanied by small exhibitions. Karoline is also continuing to develop ‘Love to Print’, although it was originally only intended as a one off set of prints for Valentine’s day 2009. Seven different artists contributed either gocco or screenprints including Gemma Correll and Sarah Ray. Due to the success of the collaboration it was followed by the ‘Obsession’ zine and ‘Winter’ boxset of prints featuring several new artists.
